The Latest on Vaccines Implications for Getting Back Together

On 11 March 2020, the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a pandemic. Nine months later, the four vaccines debuted in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Russia. The United States has since added another vaccine to the world’s public health arsenal in the fight against COVID-19 – more are certain to follow. The challenge is to overcome vaccine hesitancy so that the world can reach a level of herd immunity sufficient to interrupt the spread of COVID-19 so that we no longer fear it. For the sports and entertainment industry, herd immunity makes it possible to return to work, play, and spectate.

Dr. Til Jolly, Aveshka's Chief Medical Officer and IIFX Distinguished Fellow, welcomes Dr. Bruce Gellin, the President of Global Immunization for the Sabin Vaccine Institute to discuss the latest on vaccines and the implications for getting back together with family and our larger community. He addresses vaccination and its role in helping the sports and entertainment industry return to work, play, and spectate.

Dr. Gellin served as the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Health and Director of the National Vaccine Program Office at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), where he was the principle technical, strategic and policy advisor to the Assistant Secretary for Health on all aspects of the National Vaccine Program. In this role, Dr. Gellin served as a technical and policy advisor to the World Health Organization, focusing on influenza vaccines and global issues of vaccine hesitancy.
