President Abraham Lincoln delivered the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, which outlawed slavery in the United States. Enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation relied on the movement of Union troops, so it was not until June 19, 1865, when enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas were finally liberated.
On this day, Gordon Granger, a Union General, informed enslaved African Americans that they were free and that the Civil War had ended. This annual holiday, called “Juneteenth” (also known as, Juneteenth Independence Day, Freedom Day, or Emancipation Day) commemorates the end of slavery in the United States and has been celebrated by African Americans every year since.
Juneteenth was initially celebrated through church-centered community congregations, but over the years has evolved into large elaborate gatherings of families and communities coming together in prayer, singing songs, and having parties to include rodeos, street fairs, cookouts, historical re-enactments, and public readings of the Emancipation Proclamation. Numerous cities hold Miss Juneteenth pageants while many celebrants make a yearly pilgrimage to Galveston.
Many Aveshka team members have expressed they would like the opportunity to properly commemorate and celebrate Black history and culture, specifically Juneteenth. Aveshka celebrates this important day with you, supporting its employees who wish to celebrate this holiday. Therefore, we encourage employees to take advantage of Aveshka’s “Floating Holiday” policy.
Aveshka observes the standard 10 US federal holidays, however, employees may take these days and “float” it to a later date in order to celebrate holidays like Juneteenth or observe religious holidays and events at their own discretion. We simply ask employees to coordinate floating a holiday in advance with their managers to ensure proper coverage of duties and responsibilities.

With Aveshka team members located throughout the country, and the variances in the numerous locations and the requirements of the customers we support, it was determined that incorporating a floating holiday policy was the best way to provide flexibility.
